2. Check to Make Sure the Chimney is Clear
Fires give off smoke and carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide renders blood cells incapable of carrying oxygen and can kill people in minutes. Be sure to inspect the chimney to make sure this dangerous gas can escape to the outdoors and won’t back up into the home. Furthermore, make sure carbon monoxide detectors are functional.
3. Clean the Debris in the Furnace
Many people neglect cleaning their furnaces during the warmer months because the furnace simply isn’t used. Over time, this debris can build up and render the furnace unable to burn efficiently until the debris is cleaned. Some of this debris might be flammable, causing a fire hazard if it is blown into the open. Clean the debris prior to using a furnace.
