How to Prepare Your Furnace for the Winter

winter

As the winter season rapidly approaches, many people will be preparing their furnaces to keep their homes and loved ones warm during the cold weather. While many people enjoy sitting in front of the fire, drinking hot chocolate, and catching up with friends, it is important to make sure the furnace is both safe and operational during the cold weather months. Below are some important steps that everyone should keep in mind when using their furnace during winter.

1. Do Not Neglect Furnace Filters

Everyone knows that fires leave behind residues such as ash and dust. As the fire builds, this residue will begin to coat the furnace filters. If the furnace filters become clogged, this residue starts to back up into the house, creating an unhealthy living situation. Many people suggest replacing the furnace filters every 90 days. Be sure to look at the furnace filter every 30 days to see how dirty it looks.

2. Check to Make Sure the Chimney is Clear

Fires give off smoke and carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide renders blood cells incapable of carrying oxygen and can kill people in minutes. Be sure to inspect the chimney to make sure this dangerous gas can escape to the outdoors and won’t back up into the home. Furthermore, make sure carbon monoxide detectors are functional.

3. Clean the Debris in the Furnace

Many people neglect cleaning their furnaces during the warmer months because the furnace simply isn’t used. Over time, this debris can build up and render the furnace unable to burn efficiently until the debris is cleaned. Some of this debris might be flammable, causing a fire hazard if it is blown into the open. Clean the debris prior to using a furnace.

These are just a few of the important steps people should take prior to starting their furnace for the first time during winter. Make sure the furnace is safe prior to use.
